Black Obsidian - stone for power
Brief History and Properties
Obsidian is an igneous rock that forms as a natural glass as a result of the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes. Obsidian is high in silica (65 to 80%), poor in water, and has a chemical makeup comparable to rhyolite. Obsidian is somewhat tougher than window glass and has a glassy sheen. Though obsidian is normally jet-black in colour, the addition of hematite (iron oxide) provides red and brown variants, and the presence of small gas bubbles produces a golden shine. Other varieties have dark bands or mottling in grey, green, or yellow
Obsidian is known as the Mayan and Aztec stone. Because volcanic rock was so abundant in the region, people utilised it for everything from utensils to jewellery to weapons, and as a result, metallurgy never truly evolved. Obsidian was worth more than gold.
Healing
Many ancient societies have long respected crystals and stones for their miraculous healing qualities. Today, we've followed tradition by harnessing the frequency of these naturally occurring patterns to help in spiritual and physical healing.
The cool aspect of the stone does not end with its touch and feel. Obsidian is a well-known defensive stone, with the capacity to block, absorb, and convert negative energy. Obsidian is thought to be a stone of clarity, capable of releasing emotional, physical, and spiritual obstacles, as well as pulling out stress and anxiety. Obsidian is also used to heal past traumas, detoxify the body, and promote personal growth.
